hah, i got a private message Smiley

booyaa, i win.

NZ is out of the rugby world cup in the quarter finals... the ref missed a blatantly obvious foward pass, which went on to score a try... and the match was so close, if he had called that one out then we would have won. touch judges said it was a foward pass, the camera CLEARLY shows him foward passing (agreed by both teams), but the ref is inexperienced and wasnt close enough.

Thing is, the teams cant contest his bad call... its just not allowed, and the video ref wasnt even asked to check it.

I've watched all of one Rugby match in my life and just barely was able to comprehend how the game is played by watching that match.

Two teams. each team is trying to push the other one back, and touch the ball down anywhere on the opponents back line. "score a try"

H   the goal is shaped like an H, and when a try is scored, they try and kick it between the posts, and over the mid bar. so in the top half of the H. You get extra points for that.

Whoever has the ball runs as far as they can (plus passing and teamwork) to push down towards the oppositions side.  He normally gets tackled (only the guy with the ball gets tackled), and then passes to someone behind him, who will run foward again Smiley

no protection either Smiley just a mouthguard... american footballers without helmets + pads? heh Smiley they'll get trampled

Well, I figured out everything except for what constitutes a penalty, who gets possession of the ball when and why, and what causes a Scrum to be called for.

And that seemed to be all that happened. Run down the field, pass the ball to keep running forward, get tackled, referee blows the whistle for some entirely unknown reason and either calls a penalty or calls for a scrum.

You forgot to mention a Touchdown. =P That is, when the ball is touched to the ground behind the goal line. I also was able to figure out that the try is kicked (hmm, how to explain this?) from the same spot on the field that the ball was touched down on, except not from behind the goal line of course, but out on the field. Therefore, it is more advantageous to touch the ball down directly behind the H rather than on the edges of the field. It's easier to kick the Try in when it's a straight shot.

yeah, your understanding is the same as mine.

i think throw-ins (maybe its called a lineout? idk?) happens when the ball goes out of play by being kicked or run out of the field.  its like a throw-in in soccer i think).
then for some reason sometimes its a scrum Smiley  i think players can choose it, or maybe sometimes they have to.  scrums hurt like hell, and it turns your ear into an alien... see fig.1

[fig. 1]

thats a cauliflower ear, and it happens cause they slam their heads together with great force and friction. hmm, not fun?
