From my observations at the weddings I've been to, in my opinion I'd say alchohol is a must. It cuts the tension and lowers the irritability of your guests. You can usually spot the alchoholics (or more than likely already know them) and can make sure they don't drink themselves in to a drunken stupor. Usually both families don't get along extremely well and one mother is upset that her ideas and opinions about the wedding were blown off and she wasn't a big part of it. Not saying that's going to happen, but it's a pretty good safety net to fall back on. Just have responsible bartender(s).

If you want to have a party, the answer is yes. If you want to GTFO ASAP then the answer is no... I'm excited for you either way man, and I'd like to get an invitation if it isn't too much trouble.

I was the other of the two just so I wouldn't have to buy the liquor...

Yeah, receptions can get outrageous from a cost perspective pretty quickly if you're not careful. No alcohol is a sure way to cut that cost down. There are plenty of other things you can do to keep your guests entertained if you go the non-alcoholic route. Also, what time you have your wedding plays a large role in what people will expect from you.

Have it in the afternoon and save yourself alot of money and trouble...you can also serve lighter food in the afternoon vs a full sit down meal that some ppl anticipate with an evening reception...and for the record, I voted no.
If you sway in the other direction, have a cash bar. That is done regularly at weddings and is totally cool.

Yes, but there's a $ cap and we keep the extra if we're under that cap.

Jagor put it right... serve it for a party... otherwise don't...
Out of all the receptions I've attended, the ones that served were the most enjoyable to attend.
They key is to not let it get out of hand or you'll have a drunken mess on your hands.

Grash and I are going to have our reception in a banquet hall that has a bar. If someone wants a drink, they can buy themselves one. Of course, we're too old for my parents to pay for stuff we think, so its all on us and the numbers add up way too fast.

How can I say no to that? By the way, we have booked this performer for our entertainment at the reception: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qLWE4B1zTY

I love this comment - "(...) I actually found that video quite disturbing."
Like finding it disturbing is something unnatural. WTF did I just watch! My retinas are burning!

Yes, but there's a $ cap and we keep the extra if we're under that cap. Hopefully, your marriage will be for all eternity I would personally spend every bit of that $cap on the party, so someday when I look back I would have no regrets ! PS: Congrats

The smartest wedding receptions I have been to(astonishingly I have been to many wedding) are the ones that buy like 2 kegs to get the guests hooked then when it runs out they have to buy their own drinks. This usually works out good because once people start drinking they don't usually want to stop. Most receptions I have been to are at Country Clubs by golf courses. They usually have large ball rooms for dancing and every country club always has an ass ton of alcohol. It really also depends on what the majority of the crowd is age-wise! If they are older it would be easier for people to just buy their own, but if they are under 40 you might want think about at least one or two kegs...hell make it Natty Light!!!!
