The article tries to sum a lot up in very few words though.
when a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 - or good-ol' 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas.
The story behind this is that (without knowing it 100% myself) - it has something to do with the earth and our moon and our planet's alignment on that specific day. Apparently it will create some important weather changes that will affect us greatly.
It's not only the mayans who have a calendar about this, or nostradamus who spoke of it - pretty much every single religion and culture has it's version of dec 2012 - but contrary to what this article resumes, it's not because they think the calender ends on that date, that the earth will explode on that date. I'm not entirely sure if "we" or "they" know exactly what will happen, but I wouldn't put this in the same category as Y2K if you get my drift.
If you're really interested in the subject, I suggest you do your own research instead! (The subject is very interesting, both on a religious and scientific aspect)
(btw in no way am I trying to criticize the content of the author's post! Just trying to clear some things!)
