As I have discussed with LazyMan, I've stopped watching TV except for watching live sports broadcasts at the bars (can't attend all the Gator games ) allowing me to disconnect my cable since 2003. I still get like 10 channels because me and my roommate pay for cable internet access. Anyway, I was wondering if LaG has any book recommendations. Right now I read a lot of Tom Clancy stuff, but I also read a lot of stuff related to my work/field (medical, genetic, and biochemical journals). My current book is on primate evolution, I'll post details if anyone else is interested. I also subscribe to the NY Times with the money I saved with disconnecting cable. IBnoreplies

Here are my recommendations. Just a few authors: Gregory Maguire - He's come out with some great books! They're retold stories of "Classics." I'm 1/2 through "Wicked" which is all about Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz" how and why she became so wicked, and green! On my desk I have "Inkheart" and "Inkspell" by Cornelia Funke - They look promising. Eragon by Christopher Paolini was good and will soon be made into a movie I believe. Stephen King's Dark Tower series is very good. LOTR by Tolkien was and will always be a classic. All the Harry Potter books are wonderful! ------------------------------------------------------- If more believable stories are your genre, I'd recommend: Dean Koontz - "Tick Tock" was really stupid, wouldn't recommend it, but "Intensity" is very good and "False Memory" looks promising! GL in your search for a great book!

"The Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan and "A Wizard in War" by Christopher Stasheff are really good fantasy reads.
"Apaches" by Lorenzo Carcaterra is an awesome book about ex-cops fighting crime, not very graphic in the detail sense but giving you a huge sense of fear and disturbance through a lot of the more uglier scenes.
The "Spooksville" series by Christopher Pike is another one that gives you a sense of urgency and unease. Don't let the name fool you, it's not childish at all. Mostly about these young kids who have found the evil hidden in their town. Although if you read them in order, it gives you a lot of backstory, you can read them however you want and not really miss anything. I'd highly recommend "The Dark Corner" (#7) if you want a good taste of what the series is.
"Ender's Game" is a pretty good series, but a Sci-Fi future setting. Orson Scott Card goes a lot in to psychology, social structures, and human behavior with just about every chapter. The first book ("Ender's Game) is heavy in to "awesome, cool futuristic stuff" though, so most people get a huge kick out of that book and they're making a movie based on it. Then it moves away from that with "Speaker for the Dead" that really delves you in to thinking about human nature. I never actually got through "Xenocide" as it feels so slow and daunting every time I try to pick up where I left off.
Another good Sci-Fi is "Leonard Nimoy's Primortals: Target Earth" by Steve Perry. Actually a really good read. Brings aliens, hackers, military, and the government all rolling in to one story.

I read alot. I have most recently read in thelast 3 weeks The Da Vincii Code...good one..and Map of Bones...similar and also good. Am reading Tom Clancys Net Force books now. I have read almost all of Dean Koontz's books and liked most. My favs were Phantoms ,One Door Away from Heaven , From the Corner of His Eye ,and The Odd Thomas books. Also have read most Stephen King and they were all pretty good. "It" was a good movie but its a great book. Sci-fi.. Anne McCaffrey and the whole set of Dragonriders of Pern books is awesome. There are 12 or more I can't remember. When your done with those..get back to me.. I have several thousand more to offer...LMAO

I know everyone has their own tastes, whats good, what isnt... Ive lived from one side of Canada to the other, I have made many a journey to the book store, and before I had to give up my books, I had easily over $10,000 worth of soft covers. When I used to walk into a bookstore, and go to the Sci-Fi Fantasy section, I viewed their selection with disgust. My collection was always more vast, and with a better selection. I am telling you all this to let you know that I have read many a book in the last 25 years. There is a few series I have enjoyed in my book encounters.. I will try and remember them.. Myth series by Robert Aspirn (I think thats right), they are rather funny. Phule's series by same author are also funnyish. Vladimir Taltos series (Assassin series) by (I think) (Stephen Brust?), do a search for Vladimir Taltos, might find it there... The Sten series by Allan Cole and Chris Bunch (sci-fi), very good series. But by far, the author that I believe out shines them all would have to be in my personal opinion is Raymond E. Feist. He did a few series in the same Fantasy world of Midkemia (my spelling isnt the best, so bare with me). The Riftwar Saga (first series), Serpentwar Saga (2nd big series), and there is also a few books inbetween.. Krondor the Betrayal, Krondor The Assassin, and 1 other... In all, Raymond E. Feist is hands down the best, followed by the other series I mentioned. I do not however mention Tolkein. Why you ask? I enjoy the story he told, but I am a meat and potato man, and like a lot of things happening in my books that I read, and I found that Tolkein was too long winded for that story. Dont get me wrong, I like a good long story, I love a many booked series, but that story... Same with David Eddings... Very long winded for the story he is trying to sell.. Anyways... (Oh, and another book I always keep around, would be Battlefield Earth.. Good book, not the best movie)...
Good luck with your choice in books.

Old Favorites: -Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow (Orsen Scott Card) -Armor (John Steakly) -Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen (Garth Nixx) -The Faded Sun trilogy (CJ Cherryh) -Dune (Frank herbert) -Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Philip K. Dick) -Short stories by Philip K. Dick. The ideas for Total Recall, Minority Report, and Paycheck (there are many ) -Da Vinci Code was good (Dan Brown) -Angels and Demons, a lot like the Da Vinci Code, but a lot more graphic (also by Dan Brown) -East of Eden, I read this for school, but it turned out to be a great book. A little bit long though (John Steinbeck) -Right now, I'm reading Parasite Eve. Origianally written in Japanese, so the writing is a little different than a lot of stuff (Hideaki Sena) -Battle Royale, kind of gorey and graphic. Also an editorial against totalitarian governments and specifically fascism. Also translated from Japanese (Koushun Takami) -I read Inkheart a while ago, it never really captured my interest, but not a bad book. -After. This was a really good book. Well written and appealing to students (Francine Prose)

Awesome books I've read and recommend are as follows:
"Nathan's Run" by John Gilstrap, my favorite book, very touching, humouros at times but has a very good ending and nice plot twists in it.
"The Firm" by John Grisham, any book by Grisham is AWESOME, but this is by far my favorite from him, nicely done.
The Redwall series, I understand they're kinda for childern, but they have some very cool stories and alot of Ale drinking and sword fighting in em, they kept me entertained, look for Biran Jacques.
"Fallen Angels" by Walter Dean Meyers, I've read quiet a few Vietnam books, but this one really speaks about the war and what it does to people and such.
Thats about it. Also i hear that Sangheili likes all the Doctor Seus books, maybe you should get with him, he's got all of them and can even read them by himself! <3 Marc
